Kyoto International Manga Museum

Award-winning artist Ryoko Yamagishi’s elegant and colorful works first hit the manga scene in 1969 and rose to fame some two years later. She is known mainly for her serialized stories that focus on ballet, one of her favorite childhood pastimes, but she has published works spanning a range of other literary themes in the genres of history, horror, and fantasy. Yamagishi has won acclaim for her skilled depictions of human psychology and her impressive layout compositions. This retrospective exhibition covers the entirety of Yamagishi’s career, allowing visitors to witness the evolution of this world-renowned artist’s creative metamorphosis over time. On display are representative works from Yamagishi’s treasured publications, including 34 newly exhibited pieces from her comic, Hiizuru Tokoro no Tenshi.
