Bunriha, or “secessionist group,” is the name given to Japan’s first contemporary architectural movement. This exhibit celebrates the 100th anniversary of the group’s founding by students from Tokyo Imperial University’s Department of Architecture in 1920. Their name stems from their decision to secede from traditionalist architectural styles of the past. Influenced by European movements like Bauhaus and Expressionism, they embraced artistic expression in architecture and helped usher in a new era of modern architecture to Japan. The multimedia exhibition illustrates the trajectory of the Bunriha movement with architectural models, drawings, photographs and videos.
