Collection of Museum Boijmans:
Van Beuningen Bruegel’s The Tower of Babel and Great 16th Century Masters

In the year 1563, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, the most famous painter of the Dutch Renaissance, created his masterpiece, The Tower of Babel, inspired by the Book of Genesis tale that’s said to have resulted in today’s multilingual global society. This time-honored painting, hailed for its exquisite detail and realism, is back in Japan for the first time in 24 years alongside some 90 outstanding works from various 16th-century Dutch artists. Guests are invited to view vivid oil paintings, print works featuring the surreal motifs of Hieronymus Bosch, beautiful wooden sculptures, and more. Additionally, this exhibition will include an enlarged reproduction of Bruegel’s painting created by the Tokyo University of the Arts COI site at approximately 300 percent of its original size, giving viewers a rare opportunity to observe the tiny details of this time-honored piece up close.
