This exhibition commemorates the 10th anniversary of Kyoko Nakano’s bestselling book, Kowai-e, “scary paintings,” with a collection of modern European oil paintings and prints brought together under the theme of terror. Featured works are displayed under various themes including myth, monsters, reality, landscape, and history. Some pieces provoke fear on an overt visual level, while others stimulate horror on a contextual level after the thematic content underlying the piece is learned. Notable works include John William Waterhouse’s Circe Offering the Cup to Ulysses and Paul Delaroche’s The Execution of Lady Jane Grey. This exhibition aims to ignite horror within the imagination of its viewers.
