Saga Arashiyama Museum of Arts and Culture
This is the second instalation of a partner exhibition with the Fukuda Art Museum, which began in the fall. The main theme connecting the artwork is not of a particular style or era; rather, all of the painters have one unlikely thing in common. Whether it be a traffic accident or the death of a lover, each painter featured experienced tragic events in their lifetime. Paintings depicting historical tragedies are also included in the exhibit. The second half of the exhibition is entitled, “Coming Back from Oblivion,” introducing so-called “unknown masterpieces” by painters who were once widely recognized but have been largely forgotten. Notable artists include Ryusei Kishida, known for his yoga (Western-style painting) portraiture in the 1910s; he died of uremia at just 38. Kishi Ganku, a native of Kyoto made famous by his ink paintings of tigers in the late 1800s, is also featured.
