Yasui Konpira-gu Shrine, Kyoto
As the Japanese saying goes, “Hair is the essence of a woman’s beauty.” This hair show in the Gion district is part of a religious ceremony held annually at the Yasui Konpira-gu shrine. At 2pm, hundreds of women wearing traditional Japanese hairstyles will parade through the old streets. The styles vary widely and cover periods from ancient times up to the present day. During the ceremony, known as {kushi matsuri}, old combs and hairpins collected from all over the country are offered up and blessed. Many women visit to pray for beauty on this day.
