Minami Kizuki is a Japanese pop and shima-uta singer born in Amami Oshima, Kagoshima. Shima-uta is a genre of folk singing from the Amami Islands, made famous in the 2000s by singers Hajime Chitose and Atari Kosuke. Minami Kizuki was discovered in 2006 while singing in a park, and she made her public debut as an 18 year old in 2007. She has also sung TV themes, acted last year in the Tokyo musical Tanuki Goten, and appears on a monthly Tokyo radio show called Emotional Beat, Music Airport (since 2014). Her latest album release was last November’s Gekka Bijin. The singer also plays the piano, and the Okinawan instrument the sanshin, and is well-known as a popular TV karaoke champion.
