Lead by saxophonist Tim Armacost, the four-piece jazz group New York Standards Quartet also features David Berkman, Daiki Yosukagawa, and Gene Jackson. Growing up partly in Japan, Tim Armacost’s first encounter with an instrument was the clarinet at age six in Tokyo. Later in his teens, in the States, he started playing tenor sax. After a trip to Europe and India, he found himself in New York in 1993 where he recorded his first release as a leader. Almost 12 years since the band first came together, they have just released their latest album, Sleight of Hand. On the music, pianist Berkman says, “These are such great melodies, you can do almost anything with them and, as always with improvisation, that sense of ‘What’s happening today?’ remains exciting.”
