The Senbon Enma-do, a temple that enshrines Enma (judges of the world after death), annually hosts Enma-do’s Nenbutsu Kyogen performances which are registered as the city’s Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Nenbutsu Kyogen is a traditional comic play that was conceived as a means to communicate Buddhist thought to the common people. This year there is a total of 6 shows: 7pm on May 1 & 2, 3pm and 6pm on May 3, 1pm and 6pm on May 4. Each performance will last about 30 minutes and will include 4 to 7 Kyogen pieces. This year, as part of Enma-do’s 1000th year anniversary, this year there will be an exclusive collaborative performance of the Rokusai Nenbutsu with the Senbon Rokusai-kai on May 3 from 1pm to 2:30pm.
