February 3rd is setsubun which means “the day before the beginning of spring.” It is also the lunar new year’s eve, when the bean throwing ceremony takes place at temples and shrines across Japan. Many families still perform the traditional ceremony to scare away all the evil spirits and bring good fortune for the year to come. Experience a traditional Japanese bean-throwing ceremony at Ikuta-jinja. Local celebrities perform the ritual along with 150 other bean throwers. Stage shows will be put on beforehand at noon.
