J. Rocc started DJing in the mid-80s and is a founding member of the Word Famous Beat Junkies. He was at the forefront of turntablism in the early 1990s. Turntablism is a type of instrumental hip hop in which the DJ plays the turntable as an instrument, rather than just spinning records. In the early 90s this style and its techniques were developed by groups like the World Famous Beat Junkies, The Invibl Skratch Picklz, and the X-Ecutioners with different crews competing in DJ battles such as the annual DMC competition. J. Rocc has been an innovator in this style since its inception, working with acts like Jurassic 5 and Madlib. He was also the third member of Jlib (Madlib & J Dilla) during their live shows and has been the DJ for Madlib’s live shows since the early 2000s. The release of his first solo album Some Cold Rock Stuff on Stone’s Throw records in 2011 showed a mature artist whose composed tracks were very different from the scratching and beat juggling one usually expects from this style. He has continued to lead the way as one of the greatest DJs of his generation. Don’t miss your chance to see one of the best!
