The Magpie Salute was formed by ex-Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson in October 2016. The band also features other ‘Crowes’—guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien. They hit the stage to perform live for the first time just four months later in January 2017, playing Black Crowes songs along with tracks from both Robinson and Ford’s solo projects. The year proved to be a busy one due to demand to see the band before they settled in to the studio to record their debut album High Water 1 released last summer.
Musically, The Magpie Salute is in a similar vein to The Black Crowes—blues rock with soulful undertones. Regarding the unusual band name, Robinson said in an interview that it “comes from a superstition based in the UK…the belief that if you see a Magpie, you would do well to salute it to ward off negativity, or to have a good day.”
