Portland Japanese Garden (USA)

This lecture accompanies the exhibition, “Healing Nature: Gardens and Art of Manzanar” being held at the Portland Japanese Garden. The exhibition consists of photographic works by three photographers, Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, and Toyo Miyatake that explore the relationship between the Japanese internment camp experience in the US during WWII and the therapeutic effect that Japanese gardens provided to the detainees. Panelists include: Daniel Okimoto, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Stanford University; June Schumann, former Executive Director, Japanese-American Museum of Oregon and Karen L. Ishizuka, PhD, Chief Curator at the Japanese American National Museum.
