Kyoto Imperial Palace, Shimogamo & Kamigamo Shrines

One of the oldest festivals in Japan, Aoi Matsuri is said to have originated during the 6th century when Emperor Kinmei reigned. “Aoi” is Japanese for hollyhock, which is used to decorate costumes, floats, and other ornaments. Over 500 people participate in the procession adorning traditional dresses from the Heian period. The captivating procession moves to Kamigamo-jinja from the Imperial Palace via Shimogamo-jinja. It is free to stand and watch or follow along with the parade, but buying tickets for seats is also possible.
