Saganaka Shrine

The Saganaka area in southern Kyoto Prefecture refers to Feb 1 as the second New Year, and mochibana (a common New Years’ decoration) adorn the architecture at this time. Mochibana or “mochi flowers” are tree branches adorned with small pieces of rice cake (mochi) that resemble flowers. However, the mochibana at this event are much larger and rounder than usual. In the afternoon, traditional music and dance will be performed on the mochibana-clad staged.
