賀茂祭 足伏走馬
Kamo Shrine, Shiga
May 7
The grounds of Kamo-jinja play host to the Kamo festival which features the ancient horse-racing ceremony known as ashifusesome. Both rider and horse are fully decked out in the colorful traditional garb of the Heian period as they dash through the 400m straight courses in the grove of the shrine. The land on which the competition takes place has a long history dating back to the 7th century as the first national pasture to train horses. The shrine also provides a hands-on experience of riding on horseback during the event.
