Kamigata Ukiyoe Museum
Light and shadow have long been used as tools in kabuki theater to aid characterization and plot development. Performers seen wearing all black, for instance, are thought to be ‘invisible’ during scenes. This exhibition features a number of ukiyo-e works that capture various uses of light and shadow on the kabuki stage and seek to reveal the symbolism therein.
