Ohara Neighborhood, Kyoto
Oharame are women peddlers based in the Ohara neighborhood commonly seen during the Heian period. Donning an easy-to-wear kimono, they rested bundles of firewood on their heads, with which the women would often walk long hours to reach the city center. The procession features women dressed as Oharame and starts at Jakko-in temple, ending at Shorin-in temple. Girls and women are welcome to participate in the procession: Register by phone (075-744-2148) prior to the event, show up at Ohara Sanso between 10am and 11am on the day, and pay a fee of ¥1,500 to rent a costume.
