Reylia and Johnna Slaby, twins born and raised in Japan to American parents, are hosting their first joint exhibition in their hometown of Osaka. The pair have immersed themselves in artistic pursuits since early childhood—Reylia started out as a semi-professional graphite pencil artist, Johnna as a classically trained pianist. Upon later discovering fine art photography and abstract painting respectively, the twins finally found their preferred outlets. Reylia’s powerful images juxtapose her Japanese and Western sides, revealing the turmoil of her unique upbringing. Johnna’s chaotic abstract works reflect her colorful, zany world view. Her paintings often include physical objects, such coffee grounds, dirt, and receipts. Displayed at the InterContinental Hotel’s STRESSED patisserie, five large-scale works by each of these prolific prodigies are featured.
