Buddhism, which bases its spiritual perspectives on Buddhist sutras, presents an image of the concept of apocalypse far different from the end times described in the Christian Bible. It does not refer to the end of the world, but of the steady decline in adherence to the Buddha’s teachings. It was believed that this abandonment of Buddhism would eventually leave all members of humanity incapable of achieving enlightenment. In the seventh year of the Japanese Eishou era in 1052, aristocrats who subscribed to this vision of the future produced a number of beautiful artworks in prayer for passage to the enlightened realm. A collection of these sacred texts, statues, and traditional Japanese paintings is now on display.
