Rosanjin Kitaoji was the pseudonym of a celebrated artist—and gourmand—who gained notoriety during Japan’s Showa period (1926-1989). The year 2019 marks the 60 year anniversary of his death; in his honor, the Kyoto Museum of Contemporary Art is showcasing about 100 of his visionary works spread across five categories: Pottery, Calligraphy, Tea, Flower, and Food. Rosanjin explored many fields of arts and crafts, including pottery, calligraphy, painting, and seal-engraving—he even opened his own restaurant. During his lifetime, he met the likes of Pablo Picasso and was designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government, though he declined the honor.
