Scottish synth-pop trio Chvrches (pronounced ‘churches’) formed in September 2011 and released their debut EP Recover in March 2013. This was followed later in the year by the album The Bones of What You Believe, leading the band to be ranked fifth on the Sound of 2013 list by the UK’s BBC.
Originally starting out as a studio-only project, a breakthrough came when the band posted the track Lies on a blog. There was an immediate positive response and with that came airplay on BBC Radio.
Chvrches’ musical style is labelled as electronic or synth-pop, but the US label whose blog the band posted their first track on—Neon Gold—described their sound as “a godless hurricane of kinetic pop energy,” and the UK newspaper The Observer wrote they “make accessible electro-pop that’s only just short of truly brilliant.”
