Shunga, translated literally as “spring pictures,” is an ancient style of Japanese erotic art made with woodblock prints. The term yokai refers to a class of supernatural monsters, spirits, and demons from Japanese folklore. Both themes were popularized during the Edo period as enjoyment of the arts became a main cultural focus. This exhibition seeks to provide contrast between the themes of laughter and fear by presenting shunga and yokai works side by side, demonstrating a full spectrum of emotion portrayed in Edo-era visual art. Note: This exhibition contains graphic sexual imagery. Visitors must be 18 or over to enter.
