The title of this exhibition may be lengthy, but it’s minuscule compared to the long history of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. Dedicated to Kannon, also known as the “Goddess of Mercy,” the pilgrimage involves visiting 33 Buddhist temples in Western Japan built in her honor. Though the pilgrimage dates back to the 11th century, many of the temples go back as far as the 7th century. During the Meiji era (1868-1912), an exhibition was held in Kumamoto Prefecture featuring fabric pictures depicting scenes from an ancient text recording stories related to the pilgrimage. These fabric pictures were damaged during the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, but have been restored for this exhibition at the Osaka Museum of History.
