This collaborative exhibit displays the work of two very different artists: the painter, Takashi Saito and the ceramicist, Raku Jikinyu. Jikinyu was recently succeeded by his son, the 16th generation in the Raku family of potters. The family has been engaged in making raku ware, the pottery of choice for the Japanese tea ceremony ever since the first generation, Raku Chojiro, pioneered it five centuries ago. Jikinyu cites Saito’s dark and otherworldly art that plays on themes of decay and the essence of humanity as a major influence on his own work. Although they are an unlikely pair, the shared spirituality of the two artists emerges when their teabowls and paintings are seen side-by-side.
