Osaka’s Fujita Art Museum possesses a vast collection of historic Japanese artifacts, including many national treasures and 53 important cultural properties. The Murasaki Shikibu Diary Emaki, a 13th-century emaki (picture scroll) inspired by the diary of The Tale of Genji author Murasaki Shikibu, is among the most revered. The entire collection consists of nearly 2,000 items ranging from Buddhist paintings and sculptures to costumes used in Noh plays to archaeological finds to tea ceremony bowls and utensils. Calligraphy, ceramics, lacquerware, and textiles are also featured. Assembled by businessman Denzaburo Fujita (1841–1912) and his descendants, these items have been temporarily relocated to the Nara National Museum while the Fujita Art Museum undergoes renovations.
