This retrospective exhibition marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Yokoyama Taikan, as well as the 60th anniversary of his death. This trailblazing painter left the Tokyo School of Fine Arts with his teacher, Okakura Tenshin, to found the Japan Art Institute upon completion of his studies. Yokoyama endeavored to pioneer a new age of art characterized by a free-wheeling style to fit the era as Japan opened up to the artistic influences of the West during the late 19th century. The artist became known for his non-traditional works deeply imbued with spirituality. This exhibition includes well-known works like Metempsychosis, Cherry Blossoms at Night, and Autumn Leaves, as well as pieces that have yet to be displayed to the public.
