Japanese artist Iwao Shinno (b. 1957) is best known for Tsuiji, a type of ceramic design technique he invented in 2003. Tsuiji, which means “layered clay,” involves applying multiple layers of a clay mixture on top of each other to create a superimposed final product. Inspired by both stillness and motion, Iwao’s creations involve playing with layers and contrasting themes to craft unique shapes. This exhibition will feature examples of Tsuiji ceramics—jars, pots, vases, incense burners, teacups, and more—as well as items based around the theme of prayer. Iwao was born and studied in Kyoto, where he now teaches his art at the Kyoto City University of Arts.
