This exhibition showcases replicas of the ancient treasures kept at Nara’s Todai-ji Shosho-in Repository and rarely shown to the public. The reproductions were created by skilled craftspeople in the early 20th century. The replicas on display include artwork, instruments, handicrafts, and documents, most of which were owned by Emperor Shomu (701-756 AD). Todai-ji Shosho-in is a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing more than 9,000 treasures, dating as far back as the eighth century, at the height of the Silk Road. Many of the artifacts were imported from other Asian countries and indicate the many foreign influences present in Japanese culture at the time, such as that of Tang China.

Please check the website for anti-Covid measures (such as compulsory mask wearing) that may be in force or any last-minute changes to the exhibition schedule.
