One of Kyoto’s most iconic sites, the exquisite golden pavilion, whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf, was once the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. It became a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect after his death in 1408. Absolutely stunning after a snowfall.
