Award-winning Australian musician Courtney Melba Barnett (born 3 November 1987) released her debut album Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit in 2015 to widespread acclaim.
Barnett, a left-handed guitarist, apparently disliked the sound of guitar plectrums when she began playing and so has developed her own finger picking and strumming style.
Last spring, the singer-songwriter released her second studio album Tell Me How You Really Feel featuring straight-forward guitar-driven rock songs. Her vocal style is very casual in a sing-speak way with themes on the album exploring the challenges and frustrations of being a lyricist upon whom others have placed high expectations. Her style on this album was compared by the Guardian as comparable to grunge bands Nirvana and Hole and to indie-rock musicians Pavement and Liz Phair.
